Senate Finance Committee Invites Sector-Wide Input to Improve Governance and Practice
Convened by Independent Sector in October 2004, at the encouragement of the leaders of the Senate Finance Committee, the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector is an independent group of nonprofit leaders who will recommend actions to strengthen the governance, ethical conduct, and accountability of charitable organizations.
The Panel’s 24 distinguished members represent a wide range of the nonprofit community organizations large and small; charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs; organizations that operate worldwide or in a single community. The Senate Finance Committee requested the Panel issue two reports during 2005: an interim report, which was presented in March, and a final report, to be released in June. It will also provide supplementary comments during the fall.
To ensure that its recommendations benefit from nonprofit community’s expertise, insight and experience, the Panel established five work groups, two advisory groups and several task forces for which an additional 150 nonprofit professionals have volunteered their time and talent. The Panel has also solicited feedback from the wider nonprofit sector, asking for comments on draft recommendations from the Work Groups, convening national conference calls, and conducting 15 field meetings across the country.
The Panel is another step in the continuing journey work of organizations throughout the charitable community to uphold the highest possible ethical standards, since only by maintaining the public trust will these organizations be able to fulfill their missions.
