Election Day Involvement
Promote staff participation
One thing we as nonprofits can do to boost civic engagement is to make sure our own policies encourage employee participation in the election process. For example, nonprofits can:
- Allow late arrival and/or early departure for voting to ensure employees have an opportunity to vote;
- Allow personal leave time for serving as a nonpartisan election worker; or,
- Add Election Day as an organization-wide holiday.
Encourage your staff to vote
All nonprofits should encourage their staff to vote. Although federal law does not require that employers give employees time off to vote, many states have such requirements in situations where an employee’s work hours do not permit time to vote during poll hours.
Election Day information
One of the best websites for Election Day voter information is the League of Women Voters’ VOTE411 page. The site, www.VOTE411.org, includes links for information on early and absentee voting, locating polling places, ID requirements, and links to candidate information.
